The elephant menace

Article Abstract:

Elephants and people do not coexist peacefully in many parts of Africa. Elephants damage crops, pastures, property and life. There are many reasons for this inability to coexist including poor land-use practices, poaching, and rapid human population growth. In Kenya, many farmers have experienced loss resulting from elephants. Prior to 1989 there was a policy of compensation which provided monetary remedies for those incurring losses from elephants. However, this policy was rescinded and under the current Community Wildlife Service the only compensations available are schools and health centers.

The physiology of the hunted deer

Article Abstract:

The physiological data from a study by Patrick Bateson and Elizabeth Bradshaw of how hunting affects the biology of red deer, shows that extended pursuit has severe effects. Muscle tissue is disrupted, glycogen reserves are exhausted and red blood cells break down. One approach to understanding the effects are based on comparing the behaviour and physiology with animals exposed to hunger, illness, injury and electric shocks. Another way is to compare biological changes occuring in humans experiencing fear, anxiety or pain.

White-tailed deer: the phantom menace

Article Abstract:

The decision to allow the hunting of white-tailed deer to control their populations is criticized. The deer are accused of destroying ornamental vegetation in residential areas, car collisions and of spreading Lyme disease. Deer killing is often resorted to even when there are nonlethal methods available.
