Ground force

Article Abstract:

A team of biologists believe that parachuting into the Amazonian jungle is one way to save an ecosystem. The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois, has organized an expedition that is designed to identify areas of particular biological, geological and cultural significance before development and exploitation take hold in the upper Amazonian region of Sierra del Divisor highland forest along Peru's border with Brazil.

Annual fluxes of carbon from deforestaton and regrowth in the Brazilian Amazon

Article Abstract:

It is shown than the annual flux of carbon due to deforestation and abandonment of agricultural lands in the Brazilian Amazon was the source of around 0.2 Pg C yr(super-1) between 1989 and 1998. This is based on annual rates of deforestation, and logging may add to the estimate. The sink calculated for natural ecosystems in the area is offset by the annual source of carbon from land use change and fire.
