Guidelines for the treatment of animals in behavioural research and teaching

Article Abstract:

Ethical guidelines for the treatment of animals in behavioural research and teaching can be used to ensure animal welfare and avoidance of adverse consequences for the animals under study. The guidelines include compliance with legislative rules and laws, usage of minimum possible animals, careful selection of animals, consideration of non-animal alternatives and usage of reputable suppliers for animal procurement. Several procedural guidelines include minimization of detrimental conditions, such as social deprivation, predation, aversive stimulation and intraspecific killing.

Ethical implications of studies on infanticide and maternal aggression in rodents

Article Abstract:

There are different ways of inflicting pain and suffering to animals in studies on infanticide and maternal aggression in rodents. These include the deliberate manipulation of the situations for the experiment such as food deprivation and less obvious causes such as handling of the experimenter. There has been decreasing instances of ethically questionable experimental techniques. However, researchers must also be aware of other measures that will achieve the aims of the experiments yet inflict minimal pain and stress.
