HIV tropism

Article Abstract:

P. Nara and colleagues' conclusion that other cell surface factors besides CD4 affect HIV-1 tropism in vitro overlooks both the little that is known about HIV-CD4 interactions and the proven impact of viral factors. Moreover, their findings were based on the highly variable HIV-1 IIIB strain. In addition, they failed to prove that peripheral blood mononuclear cells demonstrate a universal tropism pertaining to HIV-1 variants.

Which gp160 vaccine?

Article Abstract:

Evidence from in vitro studies suggests that the gp160 HIV vaccine marketed by MicroGeneSys Inc (MGS) is the worst choice from viral envelope glycoprotein vaccine candidates currently available in at least one important respect. Of four gp160 products tested, the MGS version had the lowest affinity for binding CD4. This is probably due to its being misfolded and substantially denatured.

AIDS: striking the happy media

Article Abstract:

Media coverage of information on AIDS should be properly monitored by scientists, as misinformation will cause panic in the public. Some scientists indiscreetly let the media know of the failure of their researches on AIDS, and the public unrest that resulted from this information caused the UK government to change its AIDS policies.
