Habitat selection by mule deer: forage benefits or risk of predation?

Article Abstract:

The habitat selection by mountain lions and mule deer in the eastern Sierra Nevada, California from 1994 to 1997 is studied for ascertaining how forage benefit or risk of predation by mountain lions affect habitat selection by mule deer. When selecting habitat on winter range, deer were not confronted with a trade-off and they minimized the ratio of predation risk to forage benefit by selecting habitat with more bitterbrush in the Great Basin Desert.

Catch per unit effort for moose: A new approach using Weibull regression

Article Abstract:

Standard methods used to evaluate catch per unit effort (CPUE) were compared and the inability of the procedures to cope with the censored nature of harvesting a moose was illustrated. The results suggest that Weibull regression should be the positive relationship between effort and success, that could be used to model length of hunt and other covariates related to hunters and landscape characteristics for predicting success.

Evaluation of techniques for categorizing group membership of white-tailed deer

Article Abstract:

Changes in patterns of group membership are predicted to reflect sexual differences in acquisition of resources and risk of predation and a study using Hirth method for categorization of group membership in white-tailed deer is presented.
