Hard work impinges on fitness: an experimental study with zebra finches

Article Abstract:

An increased experimental workload and its impact on (parental) condition delays the timing of laying in zebra finches, Taeniopygia guttata, according to research designed to test the hypothesis that changes in activity have an impact on elements of a bird's residual fitness. It is possible that a recovery phase as a result of periods of increased activity could also have a negative impact on subsequent, although nonreproductive, events of the annual cycle, such as premigratory fattening.
