Heart rate of disturbed penguins

Article Abstract:

The decline in the populations of Adelie penguins, Pygoscelis adeliae, and chinstrap penguins, Pygoscelis antarctica, at Admiralty Bay, King George Island, has been attributed to human disturbance and aircraft operations in the area. This is suggested by a significant increase in the heart rate of breeding penguins on seeing a stranger. However, the presence of a well-behaved tourist does not adversely affect the heart rate.

Human role in Russian wild fires

Article Abstract:

The number of forest-fire events across the boreal Russian Federation for the period 2002 to 2005 in 'intact' forests is examined where human influence is limited, and in non-intact forests, which is shaped by human activity. Results show that there were more fires in years during which the weather was anomalous, but that more than 87% of fires in boreal Russia were started by people.
