Herpes viral cyclin/Cdk6 complexes evade inhibition by CDK inhibitor proteins

Article Abstract:

Mammalian cells pass through a restriction pointinto the S phase of the cell cycle, which is controlled by the activities of Cdk4 and Cdk6 combined with D-type cyclins and cyclin E/Cdk2. CDK inhibitory proteins restrict their activity. The properties of cyclins encoded by herpesvirus saimiri (HVS) and human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) are described. Both viral cyclins form active kinase complexes with Cdk6, resistant to CDK inhibitor inhibition.

From RAGs to stitches

Article Abstract:

Researchers looking at the joining phase of V(D)J recombination have been able to connect the RAG1/RAG2-dependent initiation step with one or the other joining reactions in a cell-free system. It has been found that the formation of coding-junction products is stimulated if RAG1/RAG2 are retained after the initiation step. V(D)J joining reactions seem to be rather inefficient, and this indicates that other factors may be required.
