High rates of N2 fixation by unicellular diazotrophs in the oligotrophic Pacific Ocean

Article Abstract:

The rates of N2 fixation by the small unicellular diazotrophs in oligotrophic Pacific Ocean is reported and compared with the rates of N2 fixation by larger organisms. Results indicate that the small diazotrophs are capable of equaling or exceeding the rate of N2 fixation of the larger organisms and a significant fraction of total new production in oligotrophic water is supported by the N2 fixation through unicellular diazotrophs.
