Hox proteins reach out round DNA

Article Abstract:

The structure of the Hox protein on its DNA-binding site together with a cofactor protein has been described by Passner and colleagues and Piper and colleagues in two new papers. Hox genes encode transcription factors coordinating the expression of genes required for implementing different developmental pathways, and they are a specific subset of the homeobox genes. Passner and colleagues have studied the Ultrabithorax (Ubx) protein, mutations of which result in posterior-to-central thorax transofrmations in Drosophila. Piper and colleagues studied the human HoxB-1 protein which is needed for normal rhombomere 4 development.

Genetic link to cervical tumours

Article Abstract:

Cervical cancer is strongly linked with infection by oncogenic human papilloma virus (HPV). A familial clustering among biological, but not adoptive relatives was found when comparing incidence of the disease in relatives of cases of cervical cancer and controls. The results suggest evidence of a genetic predisposition to cervical cancer.

A twist in a hedgehog's tale

Article Abstract:

The genesis of cancer is often explained by the genetics of development. The patterns of gene expression in tumours tell a tale with a twist which seems to be true for cancers of the gut.
