Human subtelomeres are hot spots of interchromosomal recombination and segmental duplication

Article Abstract:

Human subtelomeres, the polymorphic patchworks of interchromosomal segmental duplications at the ends of chromosome, are prone to homology-based sequence transfers as shown by the incongruent phylogenetic relationship of neighboring sections, when subtelomeric duplications arise. Subtelomeric dynamics result in a gene duplication rate significantly higher than the genome average and could have both advantageous and pathological effects in human biology.

Stem cells and brain tumours

Article Abstract:

Studies were conducted to identify rare populations of cancer cells in solid tumours and provide insight into the stem-cell nature of human glioblastoma, an especially nasty type of brain cancer. These studies have built on the identification of cells that express a cell-surface marker, CD133 that are resistant to ionizing radiation as they are more efficient at inducing the repair of damaged DNA that is the bulk of the tumour cells.

Secondary mutations as a mechanism of cisplatin resistance in BRCA2-mutated cancers

Article Abstract:

The mediation of the cisplatin resistance by the secondary intragenic mutations in BRCA2-mutated cancers is discussed. These secondary mutations are found to act as excellent clinical mediator of the cisplatin resistance and are highly beneficial in the platinum-based chemotherapy.
