Hydrous, silica-rich melts in the sub-arc mantle and their relationship with erupted arc lavas

Article Abstract:

A study conducted on the metasomatized mantle xenoliths of Batan island, Philippines, shows that the silica glass inclusions, interstitial glasses and host lavas have a common source of origin. The concentrations of major and trace elements in the inclusions, glasses and lavas are found similar. The hydrous silica-rich melts formed by melting of the subducted lithosphere increase the silica content of the peridotites. Arc basalts and andesites are formed by melting of these enriched peridotites.

Ultra-depleted primary melt included in an olivine from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Article Abstract:

The discovery of an ultra-depleted melt in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is reported. Like previous models, this type of melting exhibited low amounts and extreme fractionation of incompatible trace elements. This newly discovered melt is included in an olivine phenocryst in a mid-ocean-ridge basalt of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. A critical or continuos model of melting is proposed, but other models cannot be disregarded yet.

The DNA sequence of human chromosome 22

Article Abstract:

The sequence of the euchromatic part of human chromosome 22 is reported, the first sequencing landmark of th human genome project. The sequence comprises 12 contiguous segments covering 33.4 megabases, containing at least 545 genes and 134 pseudogenes.
