Hyperacute directional hearing in a microscale auditory system

Article Abstract:

Research is presented describing how the structure of the auditory channels of the fly Ormia ochracea manages to overcome its size constraints, so that the fly can locate a sound source with the same precision as humans. Attempts are now being made to use the information about Ormia ochracea's auditory structure to improve hearing aids.

In a fly's ear

Article Abstract:

All animals use their auditory systems to detect and identify sounds, and determine the source of those sounds, and they often do this by comparing what they hear in their left ear with what they hear in their right. Ormia Ochracea, a minute parasitoid fly, has perfected this technique as effectively as humans.

Ultrasonic communication in frogs

Article Abstract:

Evidence of ultrasonic communication in an amphibian, the concave-eared torrent frog (Amolops tormotus) from Huangshan Hot Springs, China is reported. Results reveal that audible as well as ultrasonic components of an A. tormotus call could evoke male vocal responses.
