Hypermutation under stress

Article Abstract:

There is still considerable disagreement between biologists about whether populations of microorganisms which cannot grow overcome this problem by using hypermutation or directed mutation. Research in this field has focused on the FC40 strain of the bacterium Escherichia coli, where the chromosomal lac operon is deleted and where there is an F' episome carrying a lacI gene with a +1 frameshift mutation. It has been established that among lac+ mutants that arise during selection for lactose utilization, there is a high frequency of tetracycline-resistance mutations on another plasmid.

The p66shc adaptor protein controls oxidative stress response and life span in mammals

Article Abstract:

Targeted mutation of the mouse p66shc gene prompts stress resistance and extends life span. It seems that p66shc is involved in the cellular responses to both growth factors and environmental stresses. This may take place through distinct pathways. It is possible that p66shc is part of a signal transduction pathway that controls stress apoptotic responses and life span in mammals. Mutation of this pathway boosts cellular and organism oxidative stress resistance and life span.
