Impact of the conservation reserve program on duck recruitment in the U.S. prairie pothole region

Article Abstract:

Research shows that the US Dept. of Agriculture's Conservation Reserve Program has had a positive impact on duck population recruitment in the nation's northern midwest region. Studies conducted between 1992 and 1997 indicate that recruitment and nest success are 30% and 46% higher, respectively, with a total of 12.4 mil new recruits to fall flight during this period.

Factors associated with duck nest success in the Prairie Pothole region of Canada

Article Abstract:

The populations of several ducks in the Prairie Pothole region of Canada were studied during a four-year period ending in 1985. Nest initiation for mallards and pintail ducks were twice as long as those of fadwalls, blue-winged teals and shovelers. Moreover, predation accounted for 72% of nest destructions for mallards, gadwall, blue-winged teal and shovelers and 65% for pintail ducks. In addition, nest success rates varied significantly in terms of geography and time-frame.
