Impaired crypsis of fish infected with a trophically transmitted parasite

Article Abstract:

An experiment investigated whether the parasite Diplostomum spathaceum alters cryptic coloration and cryptic behaviors of infected rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, to be more visible to avian predators. The results indicated that Diplostomum spathaceum eye flukes impair crypsis of fish, which is one potential mechanism to predispose them to predation by bird hosts.

Manipulation of fish host by eye flukes in relation to cataract formation and parasite infectivity

Article Abstract:

The manipulation of fish host by eye fluke is investigated to evaluate its adaptive value as a parasite strategy to increase transmission efficiency to bird hosts. The ability of the parasite to manipulate fish behavior by impairing its vision resulted from select preference for parasite genotypes with higher transmission efficiency.

The vertical component of a fish's spatial map

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to see whether the fish are able to orient in the vertical axis of their spatial maps, as it was already known that they were capable of encoding the horizontal information. The results showed that the fish orient away from higher light levels and swim faster on the increase of lower light levels.
