Widespread magma oceans on asteroidal bodies in the early Solar System

Article Abstract:

A study of oxygen isotopes in two basaltic meteorite suites, the HEDs (howardites, eucrites and diogenites, which are thought to sample the asteroid 4 Vesta) and the angrites (form an unidentified asteroidal source) is illustrated. The results demonstrate that these meteorite suites formed during early, global-scale melting events and magma oceans were present on all the differentiated Solar System bodies so far sampled.

A low density of 0.8 g cm(super -3) for the Trojan binary asteroid 617 Patroclus

Article Abstract:

The Trojan population consists of two swarms of asteroids following the same orbit as Jupiter and located at the L4 and L5 stable Lagrange points of the Jupiter-Sun system with asteroid 617 being the only known binary Trojan. The component of 617 Partoclus are very porous or composed mostly of water ice, suggesting that they could have been formed in the outer part of the solar system.

Discovery of the triple asteroidal system 87 Sylvia

Article Abstract:

A triple asteroidal system composed of a 280-km primary (87 Sylvia) and two small moonlets orbiting at 710 and 1360 km was detected in the main belt. The disruptive collision of a parent asteroid resulted in the formation of the triple asteroidal system, the accretion of fragments formed the new primary and the debris formed the moonlets.
