In vitro metabolism of glucose by bovine reproductive tissues obtained during the estrous cycle and after calving

Article Abstract:

In vitro experiments showed that glucose metabolism of bovine reproductive tissue is affected by the physiological state of the organ. For the corpus luteum, metabolism was highest in the early and middle stages. The more efficient tricarboxylic acid cycle is utilized during these phases, while glycolysis was used by the late-stage corpus luteum. Endometrial tissue was most active in the middle stage with more glucose going through the tricarboxylic acid cycle at this time. The concentration of glucose in the medium influenced the rates of uptake and metabolism, with 10 mM being most favorable.

Nitrogen and lipid metabolism in heifers fed at increasing levels of intake

Article Abstract:

Nitrogen (N) and lipid metabolism in heifers with a five graded food intake regimen were investigated to find out the relationship between the two biological processes. Fecal, urine and blood analysis, as well as post-mortem carcass evaluation were conducted to measure the animals' N metabolism and lipogenesis rates. Muscle and fat accumulation decreases at reduced diets, but the amount of nitrogen retained is positively correlated to feed intake. The results also indicate that the animal allocates more energy to the retention of nitrogen than to the accumulation of fat.

Beta-adrenergic receptor binding in crude porcine adipose tissue plasma membranes

Article Abstract:

An assay evaluating the binding patterns of beta-adrenergic receptors in the adipocyte membrane was developed through the assessment of membrane isolation procedures and ligand-binding measurement. Adipocytes from pigs were isolated and lysed. The membrane fraction was used to evaluate the biological activity of the receptors. Techniques in preparing the membrane fraction and receptor binding assay to optimize specific binding and to reduce non-specific binding were discussed.
