Infection of natural killer cells by human herpesvirus 6

Article Abstract:

Experiments were conducted to determine whether the human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) can infect natural killer (NK) cells. Immunofluorescent observations showed signs of productive infection 7-10 days after exposure to HHV-6. Complete extinction of NK cell cultures was observed 10-12 days after exposure. Furthermore, fluorocytometric evidence showed that the HHV-6 infection also induced the expression of CD4, making them also susceptible to the human immunodeficiency virus. These results demonstrate that direct infection of NK cells may constitute a mechanism of immunosuppression observed in AIDS and in chronic fatigue syndrome.

Follicular dendritic cells and human immunodeficiency virus infectivity

Article Abstract:

The presence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) on follicular dendritic cells (FDC) results in active viral infections. Transformation of neutralized HIV immune complexes to an infectious state by FDC occurs both in the absence and presence of neutralizing antibody. The process of infection continues even when excess of neutralizing antibody is present.
