Inheritance of a pre-inactivated paternal X chromosome in early mouse embryos

Article Abstract:

It was previously proved that the female zygote inherits two active X chromosomes, one each from the mother and father. However, the recent study shows that in mice, one X chromosome, that is paternal, is already silent at zygotic gene activation stage.

Complicity of gene and pseudogene

Article Abstract:

"Pseudogenes" are produced from functional genes during evolution, and are thought to be simply molecular fossils. The unexpected discovery of first biological function by Hirotsune for one pseudogene that challenges the popular belief is discussed.

Mice without a father

Article Abstract:

The importance of mammals of a proper combination of parental genes is highlighted by studies of mouse embryos that contain only maternally derived chromosomes. In mammals, genomes from both parents are generally needed to make viable offspring.
