Integrating Habitat Status, Human Population Pressure, and Protection Status into Biodiversity Conservation Priority Setting

Article Abstract:

A relative ranking method is presented for prioritizing conservation areas that incorporates both biological and social factors. Components include human population pressure, number of endemic vertebrate and plant species, human efforts in habitat protection, and habitat status. Regions identified using this method include the Philippines, China, the Atlantic Forest, the Caribbean Islands, Indo-Burma, and the Mediterranean Basin.

Genetic variability in mtDNA of the silvery gibbon: implications for the conservation of a critically endangered species

Article Abstract:

The study constitutes the first mtDNA sequence-based population genetic analysis of any gibbon species and provides data significant to the development of a comprehensive conservation strategy for the long-term sustainability of silvery gibbon. The results of the analysis reveal the presence of two genetically differentiated lineages of silvery gibbons.

Integrating the Metapopulation and Habitat Paradigms for Understanding Broad-Scale Declines of Species

Article Abstract:

The article identifies the challenges involved in integrating the habitat paradigm and the metapopulation paradigm for improving the efficacy of conservation efforts. These challenges center primarily on the measurement and quantification of vital rates.
