Interactions of an insecticide with larval density and predation in experimental amphibian communities

Article Abstract:

Studies done on the effects of the short-lived insecticide carbaryl, a neurotoxin, on amphibian communities experiencing natural stresses of competition and predation is discussed. Results of the study reveal that differences in biotic conditions influenced the potency of carbaryl and that even low concentrations induce changes that can change community dynamics in ways not predicted from single-factor, laboratory-based studies.

Variation in pesticide tolerance of tadpoles among and within species of ranidae and patterns of amphibian decline

Article Abstract:

Lethal (time-to-death) and sublethal (activity change) assays are conducted to determine the degree of variation in the sensitivity of tadpoles to a pesticide, carbaryl, at three hierarchical levels. Chemical contamination at lethal and sublethal levels can alter natural regulatory processes causing reduced amphibian populations.

Biological criteria for buffer zones around wetlands and riparian habitats for amphibians and reptiles

Article Abstract:

Research shows that the preservation of wetland biodiversity is dependent on maintaining large regions of terrestrial habitat surrounding the core aquatic habitat. Terrestrial habitat range needs were calculated at 127 to 289 m for reptiles and between 159 to 290 m for amphibians.
