International gamma-ray project favored for ESA launch in 2001

Article Abstract:

A gamma-ray observatory to be launched in 2001 will be the first joint space mission by Europe, Russia and the US. It will cost about US$600 million. Three space agencies will collaborate on the project, called the INTEGRAL (International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory).The project will be managed by the European Space Agency, the geranium spectrometer will be provided by NASA and the satellite will be lifted by a Russian Proton rocket.

European parliament rejects bid to stem confusion over gene patents

Article Abstract:

The European Parliament rejected the process of developing a perfect system of rules for patenting human genes and transgenic mice. This indicates that the existing European Patent convention will be in use and has to be used for patenting biotechnological products. This also reveals that the European Parliament is against any attempt that affects the privacy of an individual.

Mathematicians chase the seven million-dollar proofs

Article Abstract:

The Clay Mathematics Institute in Cambridge, MA, is offering $1 million for the proof of each of seven classical mathematical problems. These problems include the polynomial versus non-deterministic polynomial problem and the Riemann hypothesis regarding the distribution of prime numbers.
