It's sink or swim as a tidal wave of data approaches

Article Abstract:

The vast amounts of data being amassed fields such as genomics and astronomy will require investment in computers, new statistical tools, and a liberal approach to data sharing. CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will produce large amounts of energy and trajectory data each year, and its data system will involve high performance storage, and there is a move to object-oriented programming. However an obstacle to database sharing is concern about ownership, but researchers at the University of Kansas Natural History Museum have had success with a data retrieval protocol Z39.50. Schemes have also been proposed to extract knowledge from large stores of information, such as supercomputer-powered scientific visualization and data mining.
