Japan bids to catch up on gene sequencing

Article Abstract:

Japan currently has limited DNA sequencing capacity, with many observers attributing Japan's poor performance in genome sequencing to the failure by the government to deal with genome research in a coordinated manner. However, Japan is now making enhanced efforts to develop new technologies in functional genomics, with researchers becoming increasingly aware that the country's genome sequencing work is a long way behind that of the US and the UK.

Japan may lift industry-academy barrier

Article Abstract:

Japan's existing civil service law prevents employees of national universities participating in profit-making activities. However, a new inter-ministerial committee will now consider recommending that this law is relaxed. This development is part of the government's latest job-creation initiative, which aims to create 700,000 jobs by backing rapidly expanding industries and encouraging the commercial application of university research.
