Japan moves gingerly towards guidelines on gene therapy

Article Abstract:

A committee of Japan's Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHW) called for guidelines and a central committee to control the testing of the gene therapy on humans. However, bureaucratic complications that muddle the reviewing of recombinant DNA research must be dealt with before gene therapy research can get seriously underway. In addition, MHW as yet is ambiguous as to exactly what the guidelines should require and how the proposed committee should be structured. Some Japanese researchers question whether Japanese medical science is capable of pursuing gene therapy research.

Japan fishes for more space launches

Article Abstract:

Japan's Science and Technology Agency will initiate negotiations with fishermen close to its two space-launch centers to allow more launches each year. The agency's current agreement with fishing cooperatives in the prefectures of Kagoshima, Miyazaki and Oita in the island of Kyushu and Ehime and Kochi in Shikoku limits launches to two 45-day periods each for the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science and the National Space Development Agency. Fishermen in the vicinity of the space centers complain that launches potentially damage their fishing area.
