Japan okays test-tube baby gene tests

Article Abstract:

Japan is moving towards the introduction of preimplantation genetic diagnosis for human eggs that have been fertilized in vitro, following approval of guidelines by the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Certain factors will have to be assessed before approval for the genetic test is given, including type of targeted disease. There are concerns that the preimplantation diagnosis may be used for other purposes such as selecting the sex of the child.

Japan may require labels on genetic food

Article Abstract:

Japan is aiming for all food containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to be labelled. However the domestic food industry and overseas food importers are strongly opposed to the plans, and there were warnings from a US Trade Representative that the regulations may jeopardize trade relations between Japan and the US. There are also concerns about difficulties involved in tracing original ingredients in processed food, and the costs of testing.

Edgy Japan wants a new reconnaissance satellite

Article Abstract:

Japan is considering launching a reconnaissance satellite to improve its security information gathering capabilities, following the firing of North Korean missile over Japanese territory in the Pacific Ocean. However the resolution passed in 1969 on the non-militarization of space may be a problem, although there is strong support from opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Japan, which may ease certain restrictions.
