Japan placates fishermen after launch delay

Article Abstract:

Japan's ambition to become a major player in space activities were given hope with the successful launch, resulting in the placing of a geostationary weather satellite in transfer orbit and the release of a space flyer unit. The launch, delayed by several weeks due to technical problems resulted in the National Space Development Agency (NASDA) having to negotiate with local fishermen to allow the launch to proceed. The agreement was made with 10,000 fishermen operating adjacent to NASDA's launch center, stipulating payment of 600 million a year to fishing co-operatives for permission to launch during two-match periods.

NTT to unhook mobile phones

Article Abstract:

Japan's Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp (NTT) will split off its mobile communications sector, which will become NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. NTT will reluctantly divest itself of the fast-growing and research-oriented concern due to the government objective of achieving greater competition in the Japanese telecommunications industry. However, although NTT officials insist that the two companies will be separate, the likelihood is that NTT will withdraw very slowly from mobile communications research.
