Japanese debate more or better links

Article Abstract:

Japan's National Centre for Science Information Systems (NACSIS) plans to enhance computer network services without increasing the number of places where those services are available, which has brought NACSIS into conflict with researchers who want more universities linked by computer networks. The researchers' impatience with the NACSIS's slow expansion of networks led them to establish their own such as the Todai International Science Network. Researchers are likely to establish regional networks if the NACSIS does not.

Japanese ministry requests large increase for competitive university grants

Article Abstract:

Japan's Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (MESC) has asked that its budget for competitive research grants to universities be increased to 75 billion yen ($600 million) for FY 1993 which begins Apr 1, 1993. This 16% rise in spending indicates that the Japanese science-related ministries and agencies are carrying through on their promise of doubling government funding of research.
