Japanese computer makers enlist scientists overseas

Article Abstract:

Japanese computer companies have requested foreign scientists to assist in developing software and applications for massively parallel supercomputers. The decision of NEC Corp and Fujitsu Ltd to enter into such tie-ups draws from linkages established by US computer companies with academics. NEC has a cooperative arrangement with the new Swiss Scientific Computing Center while Fujitsu has ties with the Center for Information Research at the Australian National University. Australia and Switzerland were deemed preferable sites since there was no local industry to protest import of high-level computers.
