Japanese institutes wary of increased autonomy

Article Abstract:

Scientists in Japan are concerned about a government decision to undertake a major reorganization of national research institutes linked to science-related ministries. It will mean that over half the institutes will become semi-autonomous agencies, independent from the government. Directors of national institutes have pointed out that many institutes undertake basic research and would be unlikely to yield profitable returns. However their new status would bring more flexibility to funding.

Japanese centre will study the origins of the Universe

Article Abstract:

The University of Tokyo is planning to create a research centre to research the Big Bang concept of the origins of the Universe. A new and more flexible theory to solve the problems of free parameters in the concept could be explored. This coincides with recent findings that indicated a period of intense inflation of the Universe just after the Big Bang. The centre will replace the Research Centre for the Early Universe (RESCEU).

Unease mounts over Japan's reform plan

Article Abstract:

Japanese scientists are concerned about plans by the government to convert 14 basic research institutes linked to the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, to semi-autonomous agencies with more administrative independence. Many researchers welcome the increased flexibility in funding but are opposed to the emphasis on performance-related targets, which they feel are not appropriate for basic research laboratories.
