Issues are presented concerning the research which is to be carried out by the Genes and Minds Initiative on the mapping of the genomes of apes. The benefits this work will bring to an understanding of the functioning of the brain are discussed.

A Japanese judge has ruled that human health is adversely affected by industrial emissions and vehicle exhausts, ending an 11-year court battle between victims of pollution and the Japanese government and a group of ten industrial companies.
