K+ is an endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor in rate arteries

Article Abstract:

Muscarinic agonists in arteries release endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor (EDHF). It is shown that the hyperpoliarization of smooth muscle and relaxation of small resistance arteries induced by EDHF, are inhibited by ouabain plus Ba(supe2+) which blocks Na+/K+ ATPase. Endothelial cells are hyperpolarized by acetylcholine and K+ concentrations in the myoendothelial space is increased. Smooth muscle hyperpolarization by EDHF is abolished by charbdotoxin and apamin.

Layering of a liquid metal in contact with a hard wall

Article Abstract:

Research using X-ray scattering techniques shows that liquid gallium metal forms decreasingly dense layers when it comes into contact with a hard diamond wall. Density profile analysis demonstrates an exponential decay in density with increased distance from the surface. Evidence suggests that liquid near to the wall becomes nucleated when it freezes at low temperatures.
