Kyoto meeting will seek to build bridge over troubled water

Article Abstract:

The 1997 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Kyoto, Japan, will hopefully reach agreement on world greenhouse gas emission targets. Inevitably, many third world countries will resist the low emission targets requested by developed countries. However, European countries are agreeable to waive the demands on developing countries until wealthier nations have demonstrated committment to the emission targets. World regional carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion are given.

Energy department under fir on pace of reforms

Article Abstract:

The US Department of Energy (DoE) should have responded more rapidly to the 1995 Galvin Report criticising the efficiency of research laboratories, according to a hearing of the House Science Committee. The General Accounting Office feels that the Laboratory Operations Board has had a positive effect, but it is still advisory and lacks the power to implement reforms. However many laboratories claim to have sharply reduced overhead costs in recent years.

Jefferson accelerator will seek to pin down quark theory

Article Abstract:

The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility, Newport News, Virginia, will enable the study of quarks and the structure of the nucleus. The facility is managed by a consortium of southern US universities. The experiments on the quantum chromodynamic theory will be conducted by almost 550 scientists from 100 institutions. The experiments will initially focus on the interaction of protons and neutrons in tritium, deuterium, helium-3 and helium-4.
