US seeks fair deal for biologists on synchrotron source access

Article Abstract:

A new working group headed by National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health Director Marvin Cassman will evaluate the management and financing of synchrotron radiation sources. This group will address a number of issues, including complaints about individual investigators apparently being denied access to beamlines funded by rich consortia of researchers and companies. Attention will also be given to likely future demands on synchrotron facilities from life scientists.

Climate critics claim access blocked to unpublished data

Article Abstract:

Patrick Michaels of the University of Virginia has criticized the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for its unwillingness to release data which had not yet been published in scientific journals. Michaels, a member of a group of researchers who doubt the theory about human-induced climate change, made his allegations before a congressional hearing. He would have wanted to use such data for a model about the environmental effects of sulphate aerosols.

Ecologists urged to 'win climate debate'

Article Abstract:

US Interior Secretary, Bruce Babbitt, called on scientists at the annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America, to help convince the public over man-made global warming. Babbitt also sought support on forest management and the Endangered Species Act, but there were concerns from some scientists that this was turning science into politics.
