Laboratory investigation of the interaction of off-axis mantle plumes and spreading centres

Article Abstract:

Laboratory experiments support observation-based theories that mantle plumes interact with mid-ocean ridges beneath the lithosphere. The fluid and essential physical aspects of off-axis mantle plumes were recreated in a simulation to explore plume-ridge channelling and the influence of surface cooling and plume source temperature. A rheological border layer is necessary for the communication between the plume and ridge with high temperatures undermining the interaction by eroding the lithosphere.

Skew of mantle upwelling beneath the East Pacific Rise governs segmentation

Article Abstract:

Seismic imaging was used to show that the isotropic and anisotropic structure of the mantle is rotated beneath the East Pacific Rise. It is found that the segmentation of the rise crest between transform faults correlates well with the distribution of mantle melt.

Laboratory models of the thermal evolution of the mantle during rollback subduction

Article Abstract:

Results from laboratory experiments that reveal fundamental differences in three-dimensional mantle circulation and temperature structure in response to subduction with and without a rollback component is reported.
