Lane's landscapes: biologists such as Nancy Lane are venturing into previously unexplored and strangely beautiful realms of the cell, using sophisticated microscopies allied with familiar, age-old visual techniques

Article Abstract:

The techniques of modern electron microscopy have repeatedly provoked visual excitement in pioneers and practitioners. Nancy Lane, the Cambridge cell biologist uses complex techniques to study organic tissues, such as the cell. The technique consists of fast freezing plasma membranes of eukaryotic cells, treated with 'antifreeze' to prevent crystal formation. The two adhering membranes are cleaved with a knife and the resulting relief surfaces are then shadowed and faced up with a carbon film. Once the biological tissue is removed the metallic 'mask' is examined under a transmission electron microscope.

Graphic gropings

Article Abstract:

Collecting artists' sketches has been popular since the Renaissance but scientists' notebooks were thought to have little value until the late 19th century, with the exception being the doodlings of Leonardo. However, it is now recognized that the private papers of scientists provide fascinating insights into their minds. The papers of Henri Poincare and Thomas Edison reveal how spontaneous sketches can further technological innovation and can become a form of graphic art.

Trees of Knowledge

Article Abstract:

Einfach Komplex (Simply Complex) exhibition at the Museum of Design in Zurich, Switzerland, will be held until 4 September 2005. It features images of trees in science, presents a visual feast of naturally occurring structures, and takes to a journey of conceptual branches of the organization of knowledge.
