Large-scale impoverishment of Amazonian forests by logging and fire

Article Abstract:

Deforestation mapping programmes do not indicate the extensive damage caused by logging crews to forests in Brazilian Amazonia. Indeed, current estimates of annual deforestation for this region capture less than half of the forest area impoverished each year. Forest impoverishment as a result of logging and surface fire leads to a significant release of carbon to the atmosphere. This is not indicated in current estimates of the Amazonian carbon balance. Satellite-based deforestation monitoring must be extended to include forests affected by logging and surface fire.

Modelling conservation in the Amazon basin

Article Abstract:

The protected areas in the Amazon basin, the central feature of prevailing conservation approaches, are an important but insufficient component of this strategy, based on policy sensitive simulations of future deforestation. Expanding market pressures for sound land management and prevention of forest clearing on lands unsuitable for agriculture are critical ingredients of a strategy for comprehensive conservation.

Reforms on drug safety

Article Abstract:

A report released by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), has stated that the US drug system is outdated, disorganized and that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has neither the money nor the power to scrutinize the safety of drugs already on the market. The repot has recommended that the Congress give the FDA the authority to fine companies that fail to run promised studies of their drugs once they are for sale.
