'Leak' rumours fuel debate on gene patent

Article Abstract:

A rumour has spread that the Myriad Corporation has discovered the BRCA2 gene sequence, aided by an information leak from one of the teams collaborating with the UK Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). Both ICR and Myriad Corporation have applied for the patent of BRCA2, the second hereditary breast cancer gene. Myriad scientists disagree with the rumor and claim that they published the whole gene sequence in contrast to the partial sequence published by the ICR team.

Sparks continue to fly in Taq patent dispute

Article Abstract:

The laboratory supply company Promega continues to oppose the patent claims of Cetus Corporation, the California-based biotechnology company, on the thermostable enzyme Taq polymerase. Promega claims to possess evidence of an earlier discovery of a similar enzyme which will be presented at the federal court to challenge the validity of Cetus's patent. Another laboratory supply company in Australia is also challenging Cetus's claims on Taq polymerase.
