Legal restrictions block NASA 'institutes.'

Article Abstract:

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will not set up privatized science institutes at Ames Research Center, California, and Lewis Research Center, Ohio, due to legal obstacles. NASA has been denied exemption from the legal restriction on the movement of its scientists to the private sector. The proposed space biomedical research institute will be set up at the Johnson Space Center, Texas, as it will not be staffed by government scientists. The Ames Research Center will collaborate with universities to form several small institutes.

Researchers find silver lining in delay to work on space station

Article Abstract:

The temporary deference in the construction of the U.S.-Russian joint project, International Space Station is compensated by the NASA's venture to send additional research missions on the space shuttle while waiting for the Russian's deferred payment for the service module needed to preserve the station's pathway of orbit. The National Research Council committee admonishes a renewed support for the NASA's long-standing research flights, particularly Microgravity Science Laboratory.
