Worker reproduction and social hierarchies in Leptothorax ants

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on worker reproduction and reproductive conflicts in Leptothorax ant single- and multi-queen colonies. Worker ants were found to lay a limited number of eggs and rarely exhibited aggressive behavior. Aggressive interactions, however, increased when queens died or when they were taken away from colonies. Ant workers with higher ovarioles per ovary were observed to have a reproductive advantage as compared to those with normal ovaries.

Worker age, size and social status in queenless colonies of the ant Leptothorax gredleri

Article Abstract:

Dominance hierarchies in Leptthorax gredleri ants were examined. These hierarchies are established through aggressive interactions, and the interactions peak after hibernation. The aggression also increased when new workers eclosed in summer from a brood that had overwintered, and after the queen was removed as part of the experiment. Higher ranking worker ants tended to be larger, but age did not appear to affect rank, or fluctuating asymmetry levels.
