Lending a hand to Maine's island birds

Article Abstract:

Many of Maine's 3,500 coastal islands play a significant role in protecting many different species of bird. The islands are close to rich feeding grounds, but offer valuable sanctuary from human disturbance and mainland predators. However, it has been recognized for some time that important island habitats could come under growing pressure, and for this reason the Maine Coastal Islands Project was established in the early 1990s. This project has identified 294 nationally significant nesting islands, and has sought to protect habitat on the islands where there was no protection for nesting birds.

A wish takes wing

Article Abstract:

Sean Morrissey, an 18-year old with a rare cancer, had his wish to see the endangered California condor fulfilled, when he was allowed to visit the Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuge. Morrissey saw eight juvenile condors, who sat on tree stumps, moved around their pens, and also flapped their nine-feet long wings. The wish was granted by the Make-A-Wish-Foundation, which grants wishes to 2.5 to 18-year olds with life-threatening illnesses. Very few people can visit the refuge, as the seclusion helps in the recovery of the condors.
