Lifelong patterns of forager behavior in a tropical swarm-founding wasp: effects of specialization and activity level on longevity

Article Abstract:

The foraging behavior and certain material specializations of Polybia occidentalis (wasp) are investigated whether they involve greater risks for P. occidentalis foragers. Results show that once P. occidentalis workers enter the foraging role, they are exposed to high risk of mortality. Moreover, some foragers exhibit lifelong fixation on materials, and specialization on food as opposed to nest materials is correlated with decreased foraging tenure in P. occidentalis.

Genetic effects on task performance, but not on age polyethism, in a swarm-founding eusocial wasp

Article Abstract:

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) marker alleles were used in the investigation of genetic similarity in several study populations of the polygenous eusocial wasp, Polybia aequatorialis. Correlation studies revealed that workers who share the same tasks are genetically similar to each other. On the other hand, genetically similar individuals does not appear to undergo the same rates of age-related changes in behavior.
