Light bent by magnets

Article Abstract:

Light travelling perpendicular to an applied magnetic field via an isotropic scattering medium shows a flux of light in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic field and the injected light. The effect is due to light scattering and there is no absorption of light. The magnetic field rotates the light, alters the refractive index of the scatterers, and changes the diffusion constant. The effect will probably be significant in lasers in an external perpendicular magnetic field.

A forest air of chirality

Article Abstract:

A survey of certain volatile organic compounds in air over forest ecosystems revealed varied emission patterns of different chiral forms of enantiomeric composition of a common volatile compound. The result suggests that over the tropical forest, emission of (-)-[alpha]-pinene is like that of isoprene, light dependent while that of ()-[alpha]-pinene over the boreal forest is temperature-dependent.

High-temperature metal-organic magnets

Article Abstract:

A versatile solution-based route to a new class of metal-organic materials exhibiting magnetic order well above room temperature is illustrated. The unusual stoichiometry and striking magnetic properties highlight these compounds as members of a class of stable magnets that are at the interface between conventional inorganic magnets and genuine molecule-based magnets.
