Light on ancient photoreceptors

Article Abstract:

The study of Platynereis, a marine segmented worm, is presented that provides convincing evidence from gene-expression studies and sequence comparisons that the last common ancestor of bilaterally symmetric animals had both types. The presence for a remnant of the ciliary system in Platynereis suggests that such cells may occur more widely among invertebrates than in currently recognized, which should provide an impetus for further investigations.

Body plans and simple brains

Article Abstract:

The development of brain and spinal cord is controlled by complex and precisely regulated patterns of gene activity as a vertebrate embryo grows. Explanations regarding brain's emergence on the body surface are given.

Cadherin 23 is a component of the tip link in hair-cell stereocilia

Article Abstract:

Cadherin 23 is a component of the 'tip link' in hair-cell stereocilia. It is shown that antibodies against CDH23 label the 'tip link', and that CDH23 has biochemical properties similar to those of the 'tip link'.
