Long-term tree populations in northwest Greece through multiple Quaternary climate cycles

Article Abstract:

Evidence suggesting permanent tree populations at Ionannina, Greece through multiple interglacial and glacial periods supports the notion of long term refugia and reaffirms the importance of contemporary southern European tree populations for the maintenance of tree species in Europe. It is the southern trees that furnished European interglacial forests with similar components during the Quaternary. Failure to survive such glacial cycles is what brings about the extinction of a tree-species in Europe.

Chlorin accumulation rate as a proxy for Quaternary marine primary productivity

Article Abstract:

The determination of the rate of chlorin accumulation is a rapid and effective method for the estimation of Quaternary marine primary productivity. Chlorins are pigment-transformation products of chlorophyll that are found in abundance in Quaternary marine sediments. The high-resolution molecular stratigraphic records of over 350,000 years reveal that maximal chlorin accumulation rates correspond with peaks in accumulation rates of biogenic opal and organic carbon.
