MRC faces negligence claims over growth hormone victims

Article Abstract:

Great Britain's Medical Research Council (MRC) faces allegations of negligence in the experimental treatment of children using human growth hormone (hGH). The experiments carried out in the 1960s and 1970s involved the use of hGH from the pituitary glands of deceased people. Families of the victims have initiated legal action against MRC and the Department of Health for breach of duty with respect to the care of children. Families allege that the link between contaminated hGH and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease was ignored and the methods of extraction of the hormone were not safe.

Unloved academics: British university teachers, already badly paid, have been done out of a pay-rise they deserved

Article Abstract:

The British government believes university teachers are overpaid and underworked and so have limited their annual pay increase to 5% from 7% when the truth is that the teachers are underpaid and have salaries well below inflation rate. The university system is supposedly autonomous but is funded by the government and so is subject to the government's beliefs. The present education policy will lead to a second-rate university system and has already discouraged research because of inadequate compensation.
