Magnetic phases to order

Article Abstract:

Complex magnetic oxides such as manganites can be ordered or disordered and a range of spin, charge and orbital states can exist to differing spatial events. Length scales are important in phase separation, and a new microscopic phase was proposed to explain the 15% doped Ca are of La(sub1-x)CaxMnO(sub3) phase diagram. Unusual short range order in other complex magnetic oxides includes the pattern of NaV(sub2)O(sub5) below 35 K. There is support for macroscopic coexistence in some manganites, after measurements showed that the amount of ferromagnetic material occurring depends on thermal history.

Phases of resistance

Article Abstract:

The metal-insulator transition can be manipulated by making partial chemical substitution of the trivalent La(super3+) with a smaller trivalent rare-earth atom. The stability of one phase over another can be tuned. Uehara and colleagues have studied a range of compounds where the La is partly substituted by the smaller Pr, and the nominal Mn valence is fixed. A broad range over which the two phases coexisted was observed, and electron microscopy showed that metal and insulator were present in the same crystal.

New high-pressure phases of lithium

Article Abstract:

Research into the behaviour of lithium under high pressure is presented. Experiments confirm that structural changes to lithium take place under pressure, including a 16-atom cubic phase with a large stability region.
