Making a start on galactoarchaeology?

Article Abstract:

The question of formation of our galaxy has evoked much mention in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The discovery of the tidal disruption of Sagittarius, dwarf satellite of our galaxy, stimulated consideration about how much of the galaxy was formed by density fluctuations and how much was captured in transit. Statistical analysis of dwarf galaxies to identify non-random clustering of stars was not meaningful.

Dark arc casts a long shadow

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the implications for galactic evolutionary cycle of the discovery of a huge cold atomic cloud of hydrogen. The work of the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey in mapping atomic hydrogen in the galaxy is discussed.

A massive cloud of cold atomic hydrogen in the outer Galaxy

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the discovery of the very cold nature of the hydrogen supershell GSH139-03-69. The size of this cold atomic hydrogen cloud and its impact on the theory of evolution of the interstellar medium are discussed.
