Malarial haemozoin/beta-haematin supports haem polymerization in the absence of protein

Article Abstract:

A study of the lability of haem polymerase activity shows that polymerization is a chemical process mediated by haemozoin and beta-haematin. These results challenge the enzyme-mediation of the process and its dependence on protein. Chloroquine inhibits the activity of beta-haematin. Experimental studies reveal that both trophozoite lysate and acetonitrile extracts from synthetic beta-haematin support haem polymerization.

Aminoglycoside antibiotics induce bacterial biofilm formation

Article Abstract:

Demonstrations show that subinhibitory concentrations of aminoglycoside antibiotics induce biofilm formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Results suggest that biofilm formation can be a specific, defensive reaction to the presence of antibiotics, and the molecular basis of this response includes alterations in the level of cyclic di-guanosine monophosphate.
